Amid a National Labor Shortage, Why Does CT Have More People Unemployed Than Jobs? – NBC Connecticut

The country has been facing the opposite problem since a year ago, where instead of having a large number of unemployed, most states are now seeing more open jobs and not enough people to fill them. But Connecticut is one of only eight states with more unemployed people currently, and there aren’t enough jobs currently open.

According to a new Pew Research report, there is less than one job available to every unemployed person in our state.

Daryl Capuano, CEO of Connecticut Career Consulting, sat down with Dan Corcoran of NBC Connecticut to talk about what that means.

And: “Daryl, we’ve heard about this labor shortage and how employers can’t find people to fill these jobs. But did these numbers show something different going on here in Connecticut?”

Capuano: “They do. But not all news is bad. So the good news from my optimistic view is that Connecticut has real, attractive jobs in banking and financial insurance, and these jobs are full-time jobs that go into the indefinite future. They have benefits, they are attractive for many reasons. Well, we don’t have a lot of shift jobs that are part-time, temp, and they don’t have benefits. Now, some people might say, Connecticut is also obviously a slow-growing state. That’s of course part of the problem,

And: “Let’s talk more about that. What does it say about our state’s workforce and the economy that we have more unemployed people than open jobs.”

Capuano: “We have a large population that is highly educated and fairly affluent. So a reasonable number of my clients who fit these descriptions are not ready to compromise. So they are making decisions perhaps to remain on the sidelines until they can find a more attractive job.” Some of that also stems from affluence.A reasonable number of our clients are young adults in their twenties, and there’s kind of a failure at all. Some of that comes from anxiety, some of that comes from living at home is also not bad in a place like Connecticut, especially near And some of that, of course, slows the Connecticut economy a little bit. So there’s a little bit of good news and a little bit of bad news.”

And: “So when you look at the New England area, places like New Hampshire, Vermont, they have more than twice as many jobs available than this state here. Do you think people in Connecticut would start looking elsewhere maybe out of state if they should?”

Capuano: “New York and New Jersey actually have a situation similar to Connecticut, and I think part of it is this unusual situation that we’re in, we can choose to stay home and live a very nice life if you live in certain cities in Connecticut, and I’ve noticed that a fair number of people make that choice.” So when they decide what they want to do, they don’t want to do something that’s really unattractive. Now, that means they want to live in Connecticut because of the nice quality of life. So I don’t necessarily see them leaving Connecticut, but there, too, they might be sitting on the sidelines and it might seem like they don’t. They want to work because they are not enough and they do not have the jobs that they will like.”
