AWS spurs Machine Learning research with free lab, $10M scholarship

Amazon Web Services (AWS) this week announced a public preview of the SageMaker Studio Lab. AWS also announced an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Scholarship. The new $10 million program will prepare underrepresented and disadvantaged students globally for careers in machine learning. The announcements came during this week’s AWS re: Invent event.

AWS hopes that SageMaker Studio Lab will attract developers, academics, and data scientists to learn and experiment with machine learning (ML).

“With Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab, Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab customers will be able to focus on experimenting with the data science aspect of machine learning, without having to set up or configure any infrastructure,” AWS said.

SageMaker Studio Lab is based on the open source JupyterLab web application. JupyterLab is an interactive web-based development environment for laptops, code, and data.

Growing need for ML experience
