Hickory, NC (December 9, 2021) – The Bill McDonald Scholarship Fund Committee has donated $4,000 to local charities to benefit children this holiday season.
The Hickory Fire Department’s Bicycles for Tykes Program and the Hickory Police Department’s Cops for Tots Program both received a $2,000 donation. This is the sixth year in a row that the Fund has supported these two charitable programs.
Each year, the Hickory Fire Department collects new and gently used bikes and tricycles for local disadvantaged children through the Bikes for Tykes Program. Funds from the Bill McDonald Scholarship Fund will enable the program to purchase approximately 50 new bikes for children living in Hickory. These bikes, along with other bikes donated by the local community, will be distributed to local children through the Catawba County Christmas Office.
Likewise, during the holiday season, the Hickory Police Department collects new toys and money donations for Cops for Tots Christmas Wish House, which benefits disadvantaged children age 13 and younger. The donation will go from the Bill McDonald Scholarship Fund to purchase sports equipment for children who live in Hickory.
The Bill MacDonald Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 in memory of former Hickory Mayor William R. “Bill” MacDonald III. One of Mayor McDonald’s last wishes before his death in May 2014 was that the city establish a fund that would allow any child living in Hickory the opportunity to participate in Hickory parks, recreation and sports tourism programs and activities.
“Bill is smiling from heaven knowing that the money raised in his name will go to the boys and girls of Hickory – a place he loves with all his heart,” said McDonald’s Mayor’s wife, Susan B. McDonald’s. “Bill wanted all the kids in Hickory to stay active and be healthy, and he also believed that the kids learned a lot about life through fun activities. My family and I are very happy to know that many kids who don’t have that much will now have basketballs and volleyballs. Introduced, new bikes, and more on Christmas morning because of the scholarship fund in his name.”
Today, the Bill McDonald Scholarship Fund provides or assists children 15 and younger, with fees and equipment costs for Hickory’s theme park programs. Any child residing within Hickory city limits may benefit from the Scholarship Fund. Prospective recipients must complete an application for consideration. Recipients cannot be expelled from school or suspended from any parks, recreation and sports tourism program.
To be considered for a scholarship, all deadlines associated with the application process must be met. Funds are available on a first come first serve basis, if there are funds available. The amount of scholarship a child receives depends on the financial situation of the family and the availability of scholarship funds. Recipients may not exceed two awards in each calendar year. The Bill MacDonald Scholarship Fund Committee will have the final decision on all awards.
In addition to accepting donations throughout the year, money for the fund is raised by Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Events, such as Trick or Trot 5K and the annual Christmas Parade.
