Following the Suspension slammed on micro blogging and social networking service Twitter by the Buhari-led government, users can no longer access the platform.

Users confirmed Friday night that they can no longer access the website from Nigeria.

The development is coming following indications that the federal government directed all telecom operators in the country to deactivate twitter on their networks by 12 midnight.

REPUBLICAN NIGERIA learnt that it may not be unconnected with the decision of government to ban activities of Twitter in the country following the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet, which the microblogging site deemed offensive.

Meanwhile, Check by REPUBLICAN NIGERIA on Friday midnight confirmed that no twitter account work within the country.

Users complained that they were unable to login while some said they could only sight the platform interface alone.

Irked by the development, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had slammed the federal government for suspending the operation of Twitter in Nigeria.

The legal body also threatened to challenge the decision in court.

President of NBA, Olumide Akpata, noted that Nigeria is operating a democracy, which stipulates that every action of the government must be backed by the law.

Akpata said the directive to the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to begin the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria, “is another disguised attempt to regulate social media, restrict freedom of speech and shrink civic space.”

He added that the NBA “finds no constitutional or legal authority to support the peremptory action of the Federal Government to suspend the operations of Twitter in Nigeria.”

Akpata called on the government to immediately reverse the decision, or the NBA will “have no choice but to challenge same in the interest of the public and for the sake of our democracy.”

More to come…
