New Climate Institute

The Newclimate Institute (www.newclimate.org) is a think tank with offices in Cologne and Berlin. We are a team of researchers and policy advisors with extensive experience in supporting international climate negotiations and associated national and international processes. Through our policy-oriented research and capacity building, we help international organizations, national governments, NGOs, and other actors to find and implement solutions to the global climate change challenge. The NewClimate Institute regularly works with motivated Master’s degree students, interested in a career in sustainable development and climate policy, who may join the NewClimate Institute team for a 3-month internship (longer period is possible if it is a mandatory part of the study program). For this position, we are looking for a candidate to support research in our project “Deep Carbon Decarbonization in Latin America”, with a focus on creating favorable conditions for aligning financial flows with low-carbon development paths in selected Latin American countries.

Possible tasks may include:

  • Support the preparation of a report on climate-friendly investments in agricultural activities, especially in the food chain, in Latin America, with a special focus on our partner countries Argentina, Brazil and Peru.
  • Literature review and data collection on topics related to financial instruments, policies and measures to attract public and private investment and investment case studies in the agricultural sector.
  • Support the development of research outputs and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • General project support (dedicated desk research on different sectors/topics, contributions to presentations, reports, etc.).

Training fee will be paid. Actual circumstances depend on the qualifications of the candidate.

Candidate Profile

The preferred candidate is an enthusiastic MSc student with a high degree of responsibility and independent working style, and a deep interest in the field of climate policy and climate finance, ideally with some understanding of different types of policy instruments and/or experience in the agriculture sector.

Basic requirements:

  • Enroll in a master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field of study with a focus in political science, environmental studies, climate change, sustainable development, or a related subject for the duration of the internship.
  • Knowledge of the agricultural sector and food supply chain is a strong advantage.
  • The ability to learn quickly and openness to delve into various topics related to climate.
  • Interest in working in the context of developing countries. Pre-existing knowledge and experience in the Latin American context is an advantage.
  • Interest and competence in conducting data analysis and developing research methods.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Languages: Proficiency in English speaking and writing skills, Spanish or Portuguese language skills is a strong advantage.
  • EU passport or German university admission.
