[adace-ad id="2627"]

Each summer, students of the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics gain valuable professional-level experience through internships. In 2021, young scientists were able to navigate the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic by pursuing a range of internships, externships, and other professional development opportunities. Each profile in this series will describe a Lerner student’s experiences working on business-oriented projects.

Grace Fritz, part of the Class of 2023, is a double major Operations and Marketing Management with a minor in Entrepreneurship. She spent the summer of 2021 as a marketing intern at the World Trade Center Institute.

Q: How did you find out about this training? Why did you choose it?

[adace-ad id="2627"]

Fritz: shake hand. The job description matches whatever you are interested in gaining experience with. The World Trade Center Institute (WTCI) also has a good reputation and I thought it was a great opportunity to learn more about global business from such a wonderful organization.

Q: Has the coronavirus pandemic affected your search for training and work experience? If so, how?

Fritz: Unfortunately, I was away all summer, but was still able to get the same experience acquiring skills and interacting with the WTCI community. I will also be called back in March to help out with an upcoming event that has been postponed from September due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Q: What did you learn from this training that you think you would not have learned elsewhere?

[adace-ad id="2627"]

Fritz: The most valuable experience I gained was from this global perspective. I learned a lot about how businesses interact within the larger international community as well as the local Baltimore area of Maryland. Having been able to experience this from one of the most respected and famous organizations, the World Trade Center Institute, I don’t think I would have had that experience elsewhere.

Q: What is the most exciting task or project you have done or are currently doing in your role?

Fritz: I am grateful for my experience working on print materials for the Maryland International Business Leadership Awards. I worked with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs to help develop print materials for various aspects of this event. This was the most exciting task because I knew that the work I was doing was critical to the smooth execution of the event.

Q: What is an example of a time when you were able to apply what you learned at Lerner to your role?

Fritz: Communication was a huge thing that I was able to bring to this instructable from Lerner. Through Lerner, I was able to learn a lot about communicating in different ways. I was able to communicate with my managers in the marketing department but I was also able to communicate effectively with others in different departments in order to achieve the goals and tasks that were at hand.

Q: How do you think this training will help you achieve your career goals?

[adace-ad id="2627"]

Fritz: This experience has been so amazing because it made me confident in the other roles I might play. I have been able to learn many skills that will allow me to succeed in future roles. I think the learning curve would be much easier for me due to this previous background. I also know that all the skills and experience I gained from this training will allow me to stand out among other employers.

Q: What are your plans or next steps in your career once your internship is over?

Fritz: Since this internship in Marketing was my second internship, I would like to pursue more opportunities related to other areas of my academic interest. Being a dual major, I am currently pursuing opportunities that focus on Operations Management so that I can gain more experience in this field. I also believe that my marketing organization is strong and I will be able to apply much of what I have already learned in the areas of operations.
