Stanford, Harvard…big names but small classes, which lends great competition to potential students. The best business schools in the world have low acceptance rates, which makes getting into them very difficult. telegraph Talk to David Boyson, professor emeritus at the University of Otago, about admissions to global business schools, with a particular focus on Indian students, and how they can best prepare for applications. David Boyson, a global business strategist and coach, is known in business circles for his work with entrepreneurs and companies. We also gathered that David’s expertise and experience across the disciplines of science, business, design, manufacturing and marketing has led him to advise numerous students, alumni, and businesses on potential opportunities for development.
Judging by recollections of his visits to India, Poisson referred to the large population in India saying that while Indians are doing very well in entering, in percentage terms, there are still apparently fewer of them being admitted. He noted that business school classes are increasingly starting to look at non-academic standards.
“While they would normally do (admissions) a lot on academic grounds and that kind of thing, now they want a much more diverse population which means that those who would have gone (from India) naturally have lowered interests. One of the things that I find exciting is What’s interesting when I work with Indians is that you meet Indians and they’re good at quantum, you know, you give them the GMAT and they’ll excel…with high scores, they’re very good at which-that.But business schools are looking for more. One of the things I find in Indian students is that they don’t end up reading. I think maybe it’s partly because the education system is so focused on rote learning and that kind of thing,” which is why he thinks he should be careful to say why Indians fail. “A lot of people are doing very well and you are only looking at success. I think the Indians are doing really well. Your apps are second only to the Chinese and they will complain that more of them fail!”
The school itself has changed.
The scholarship is suitable for most of the Indian students to fulfill their dream of studying abroad, especially in the United States. Tuition fees are high and the cost of living is higher. Moreover, scholarships are often difficult to obtain and are more than just a seat in prestigious institutions. We asked him what the best high schools look for when they offer scholarships. “Today I suppose they are looking at much more than just a regular application. I suppose Stanford University is a good example of that. Knight-Hennessy Scholarships are what top schools are looking for now and they are very prestigious. They are looking for people who are visionary thinkers, who have Inquisitive and open minds. They want you at the intersection of disciplines, so you know, instead of one plus one equals two, one plus one appears as four, where two people come together, and people from different disciplines reinforce each other. So today they are looking for people who have got More than a straightforward disciplinary approach.
“For example, if an engineer is applying, they want to be more than just a design and creative engineer, or that sort of thing. Universities in the past, like MIT and Stanford, were very quantitative oriented. Now, for an example MBA at Stanford, it’s a combination of D School, School of Design, and School of Business. So, the school itself has changed.”
Given that these schools have such low acceptance rates, it is clear that you have to stand out in order to get into them. David frequently mentioned: “I always say to students, put yourselves in. There are 20 of you standing and you are all friends. You look at the other 19, and you say what makes me different from these other 19? What makes me stand out? Why do they choose me? That is Cause in anything you do;Do you think it would help me to be in the program?I had a girl recently who came in, and she’s done origami, for multi-storey buildings. This is different, but it’s also very creative. And he’s too engineer to do something like this. It is often the very little things that make you special rather than the big thing.”
When doing the syllabus, consistency is also key: “You can do great internships and community service but just doing a lot of individual tasks won’t work. They want to see continuity. People often try to have a whole pile of little things. So, it feels like A great stringer and that’s not what we’re looking for. We’re looking for someone who stuck with, you know, did it and lasted over a period of time. So, you better do some stuff in depth.”
“What is your vision for yourself?”
While the Indians are better at hacking the GMAT, the professor feels that they cannot communicate well through their writing. He went on to mention how important it is to ensure that the feelings are present in the application essays, that they are creative and can portray what constitutes the applicant for what they are now, the ‘life vicissitudes’. It is critical to have a unique and powerful vision, as well as know how to bring it up.
“What are your short- and long-term goals? I ask them questions to put them in the right frame of mind, I say you’re 80, with grandchildren running around your feet, and you tell them what you’ve achieved in life, in a market made of global. I keep saying, you’re like A company you know, what is your vision for yourself? Companies have visions, and you have to have the ambition to reach that vision. Someone said to me, when I asked, “I will tell them, I will win a Nobel Prize.” Another said to me “I will be the Prime Minister of Japan.” So, this Is the hardest part, actually getting people to think in the short, medium and long term. I’m going to live in a nice house. Often the kids will visit; we’ll be comfortable. It won’t take you anywhere at all, and it won’t even get you off the table, let alone any Elsewhere. I want to see a goal, your life goal, what that purpose is and how to get there.”
As the video call ended, we gathered more insights into what the best business schools in the world are looking for in their student applications: “They want people who have really gone out and been involved in the community. Recently, these two amazing Indian youngsters, during Covid, started working With non-profit organizations to help them get online facilities for people who can’t afford it.When Covid hit and they had to do everything online, they didn’t have the systems in place. So, these two Indian students got together. This thing really grew as a movement around world. And that’s the kind of thing that’s going to start.”
