Why UTEP students should experience the wonders of studying abroad – The Prospector

[adace-ad id="2627"]

The one thing that’s been on my mind for the past eight months has finally arrived, my exchange year. A year in Brazil, this wasn’t bad at all. I’m tired of doing the same things every day. I wanted something different, a change, and this was my chance. A different house, different people, a language I didn’t know, as well as an unexplored country. I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I wanted to make the most of it.

When I was 17, I decided to put my life on hold in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, to study abroad for a year. For eight months I went through the exchange program registration process and on July 21, 2015, my trip to Belo Horizonte, Brazil the late. I will never forget the experiences I had while in Brazil. I found myself facing many obstacles during my year abroad, but despite everything, I think it was one of the most impactful years of my life. During my time in Brazil, I had to step out of my comfort zone, think quickly on my feet during difficult situations, and this allowed me to gain new skills and build more confidence in myself.

Studying abroad is something UTEP students can benefit from no matter where they choose to go. The important thing is to be really interested in learning about the country, integrating themselves to be part of the community, and most importantly, knowing how they can use what has been learned to help their communities back home. This experience provides opportunities to build character, learn about the world, and grow as a person. First of all, there are many cultures around the world, each with its own traditions and beliefs. No matter who is affected by it, it is always in constant change.

Not everything was comfortable. Homesickness was one of the first obstacles on my journey, along with the language barrier, but in the long run it has allowed me to grow as a person and in such a short time. As I integrated myself into the community, I began to make friends that I was positive and would last a lifetime, and I learned how people value not only their own culture but mine as well. In order to overcome my suffering, I made sure not to be afraid to seek help and guidance from others around me. While bonding with other exchange students, I was amazed by their lifestyle and I was interested in learning about their traditions and beliefs as well. Not only did I learn about Brazil, but I also had the opportunity to learn from different countries around the world through my friendship with other exchange students.

Besides learning about the cultural aspects of a country, studying abroad can also have a tremendous impact on a student’s education and academic performance. according to University of California Merced, Study Georgia It shows that students who studied abroad saw their GPA rise twice as fast as a result of traveling abroad than students who stayed in the city, as well as twice as likely to find a job after graduation. In my experience, studying abroad allows students to encounter a different approach to education and encourages them to look for new ways of learning. It may expand a person’s knowledge in many subjects including media, politics, education and even challenge them to learn a new language. In a professional environment, studying abroad may also present itself as an advantage, providing better opportunities depending on the organizations or companies you look for in applicants.

As I mentioned, there will be many challenges along the way, but the key to a successful year abroad is to be open-minded and eager to learn. During what seemed like 12 short months, I was introduced to a great culture. Brazil means warmth, and I’m not just talking about the weather. People in Brazil just make you feel welcome, always eager to meet foreigners and learn from them. Brazil also means “iversão,” which is the Portuguese word for pleasure. Wherever you go you will usually find people who are drinking, listening to music and having a good time.

Although my experience actually happened during my high school years, I have no doubt that seizing the opportunity as an undergraduate is worth it, and as a UTEP student, you will be able to learn as much as I did, if not more. Despite the difficult times we have all been through with COVID-19, and how impossible it is today for students to experience studying abroad, UTEP offers many different programs and options for its students to give the opportunity and live the experience.

Having experienced this way of life, there are many benefits that I have gained both personally and academically from my experience. I couldn’t force myself to stop learning about other cultures or limit myself to only communicating with those who spoke the same languages as I do. Studying abroad sparked my curiosity and broadened my view of the world, causing me to question our behavior in relation to the world around us and how it differs from one culture to another. I have learned to think critically in order to adapt and build trust in different environments, and most importantly, to always appreciate the world around us.
