With extreme gerrymanders locking in, Biden needs to make democracy preservation job one

[adace-ad id="2627"]

It is time for political leaders to step up their game in preserving democracy.

The International Institute for Democracy and Elections, an intergovernmental organization that works to advance and advance electoral processes around the world, issued its latest warning on the state of democracy in the United States on Monday.

Its new report includes this country among those experiencing “a severe and deliberate kind of democratic erosion.”

Among other things, the report cited recently approved state voter registration and voting laws in Republicans that “disproportionately affect minorities in a negative way.”

A July statement from 150 scholars made nearly identical points about Republican states’ subversion of the nonpartisan vote count: in the USA. The history of other crisis-ridden democracies tells us that this threat cannot be eliminated.”

And the scholars wrote that: (It is approaching midnight).

Journalist Anne Appelbaum recently warned that “the bad guys are winning” in the battle between authoritarianism and democracy.

However, as these warnings spread and become more dangerous than ever, many Democratic Party leaders, including President BidenUS Lawmakers Joe Biden Arrives in Taiwan to Meet Local Officials Biden Meets with the Coast Guard on Thanksgiving Five reasons Biden and the Republican Party are thankful this season MoreThey have not yet put the preservation of democracy at the top of their agenda. They did not sound the alarm in a way that would attract public attention and awaken Americans to respond to the gathering danger.

President Biden has spoken periodically about the dangers our democracy faces, as he did in a speech in October when he said, “Nothing about our freedom is guaranteed. We have to work for it.” Next month, the Democracy Summit will be held to discuss how to coordinate efforts.

Critics warn that these occasional raids of talk of democracy reform threaten to become Biden’s equivalent of Trump’s much-announced “infrastructure weeks” — all words, no action. They blame Biden for not making preserving democracy his focus or using the bully pulpit to issue a warning about the precarious state of democratic institutions.

But Biden seems to care at least.

These measures will stop the republican tide aimed at drowning our freedom.

On November 8, Sinema threw cold water on all of these proposals: “My view is that legislation being drafted together, in a bipartisan fashion, is the legislation that is most likely to pass and stand the test of time.” Do you live in a fantasy world?

In the real world, it is better to adopt a law protecting voting rights now and allow time to test it than to have no law – and no democracy – at all.

Soon it will be too late to stop Republican state legislatures from manipulating the House of the People in the Trump House.

In Georgia, the Republican legislature changed the district represented by the Democratic Representative of the United States. North Carolina, where the Republican legislature twice in recent years has violated the Constitution in its partisan redistricting effort, has drawn a map that has so radically tarnished the district of 17-year-old Democratic Congressman J.K. Butterworth that he has decided to retire next year.

The new Ohio map has a similar impact on minority voter districts and received an “F” score from the nonpartisan Gerrymander Project at Princeton.

And not to be outdone in this race for election fraud, Texas just adopted a map that secures counties for the state’s 23 Republican incumbents while creating two secure Republican seats — all after the 2020 census attributed state growth to an increased minority.

Adam Kinkade, leader of the National Republican Fund for Redistricting, admitted that “competitive Republican seats are off the board.”

Increasing non-competitive constituencies stimulates more extreme positions by MPs who serve an extremist base. Some American lawyers and jurors are doing their best to counter the authoritarian threat. On November 23, a North Carolina jury awarded $26 million to injured victims in their case against white supremacist leaders at the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville.

On November 23, the National Redistricting Action Fund sued Ohioans over its map. We can’t count on these allowances, because in 2019, in Rochu against the common causeAnd The Supreme Court severely flipped the law in favor of partisan squaring of districts.

In response to this decision, and the 89 percent of Americans who oppose gerrymandering, the Congressional Freedom of Voting Act will correct the balance. It sets objective standards to combat unfair maps. If state legislators create a single seat or 7 percent advantage for either party other than what the state’s residents grant, the law creates a presumption of illegality that partisans compelled to refute in court.

Without this correction, the benefits of expanded tax credits for children, financial support for child or aged care, improved health care and the fight against climate change, will elude ordinary Americans.

Understandably, President Biden has devoted a lot of energy to securing the passage of the Rebuilding Better Act, his signature legislation providing those benefits and more. He seems to believe that if he can show people that government can make their lives better, they will vote against totalitarian takeover.

But without a fair electoral system, there is no future for the Rebuilding Better Act — and no way for people to translate their gratitude for government assistance into political reality. That is why the president should press immediately and publicly to rein in the stalling that threatens the Freedom of Voting Act.

On October 20, Republican senators even blocked the debate on the senator. If Manchin did, reclusive Sinema might not be far behind.

The President should check on a simple truth: Nothing should be allowed to stand in the way of preserving the right of every citizen to participate in choosing our government. as President ObamaBarack Hussein Obama Missed paperwork deadline delays Biden’s FDA nomination: Poll report: Democracy under attack, more violence may be future. He put it in his farewell speech, “It is up to each of us . . . the protectors of our democracy are anxious, jealous.”

President Biden, Senator Manchin, and especially Senator Cinema, need to heed these words and remember that there is no greater call in this moment of danger than to protect our democratic freedoms with relentless vigilance.
